UPDATED FOR THE LAST STAND UPDATE (Windows 7 - 10)
***Broken again by L4D2 update  so ill repack it when i can get all the updates, and change the version to v1.2 - 7/5/21***

Just in case anyone wanted i made a folder directory with sourcemod, metamod, and some plugins that are useful for players to install into their own L4D2 game, and also that allow 8 players in Single Player or the Local Host modes. (Superversus, L4DToolz, Dhooks v2.2, and some others, see the credits section of the ReadMe)

NOTE: You Do Not "need" these packs / SourceMod and the different plugins, to be able to play 8 player Coop campaigns in L4D2 online with friends, this is only if you want your own games Single Player and Local Host options to run with 8 players, and all the new settings / features that are achieved with these SourceMod plugins. (like the stat tracker plugin, which keeps track of all players kills etc. over time, see the ReadMe file for the usable chat commands)

You can just start a regular L4D2 lobby, and make sure the Server Type setting of the lobby is set to Steam Group Server instead of Official Dedicated, then when the Lobby Leader player starts the match it will allow him/her to pick a server from their own Steam Group Servers List, and then just make sure they pick a server that allows 8 player coop.
(Just dont let everyone in the lobby vote to start, otherwise it will choose a random server at the end of the countdown, and the random one it finds may not support / have 8 player coop setup)

Like our DG | coop #1 or #3 Custom servers do, and in that way you can play 8 player coop online with your friends but dont have to install anything into your own game files, or struggle with the Local Host instability if yours does not want to work great.
If your Steam Group Servers List says 0 servers in L4D2, then you actually have to join a steam group before any of their servers will show up in-game, there are a bunch of Public steam group servers, like ours are, in the list that should always show up even if you didnt join the servers Steam Group, but if your Steam Profile settings is set to
Friends-Only or Private viewability, it makes it so even public servers dont show up in your Group Servers List.
(i have no idea why Valve thought that would be a good system for the game lol, and it might be bugged / broken now since Steam recently updated the different privacy settings for our Profiles)

Beware if you want to uninstall it later you will need to know a little bit about file tree structure / folder directories, and what folders to delete, although it only takes deleting 2 or 3 folders so its not bad, just check the Installation info and ReadMe files in the 1st folder after unzipping. (or uninstalling L4D2 and reinstalling through Steam, but that takes way longer than finding and deleting a couple folders)

also try to make sure your using an Ethernet Cord if you plan to try and use Local Host to play online with friends, normally Wi-Fi doesnt matter with a Dedicated Server but your friends will notice the difference in local when joining you, but Local Host always has rough ping if the players joining arent really close to the host, it was probably intended as more of a LAN option, so if it doesnt work for you then you will have to find a Steam Group Server to use that allows 8 players. (again, like our DG | Coop #1 and #3 servers do, and also some other communities have 8 player Coop and 16 player Versus servers, although its a pain to find them cuz not a lot of ppl use the Steam Page here https://steamcommunity.com/app/550/discussions/1/ since posts only last a few days there before being so far back nobody see's)

********************************** Downloads *** v1.1 ***************************************
uses SM 1.10.0
and MM 1.11.0

Click Here for the Default Superversus pack.

* You can try having the 5+ joining players use the !survivor command in their chat, theres a "Locked in Spectate mode and no survivor to play as" bug in the SuperVersus plugin for SM that makes 8 players work, which makes them join the Survivor Team and should spawn their extra Survivor to play as but they are dead till the next saferoom.
(to avoid abuse from ppl doing a rejoin for a respawn)
if the SuperVersus 5+ Spectate bug gets fixed ill download the new plugin to update this pack and make it the next version. *

This is set up default style where only 4 survivors spawn unless 5 players join, then it spawns a new survivor for a total of 5 and so on up to 8 players, also adds special infected per survivor, and adjusts specials, hordes, and tank health, i adjusted a few things so there isnt 2x hordes with 8 players just 40% more, and specials dont get 2x health with 8 players just 60% more since theres more that spawn as well, cuz i know 100% default superversus settings bug most players cuz of the hordes / spawns, so it should be good to go. xP

Or Click Here for the DG Superversus pack.

Which is set up like our DG 8 player servers Superversus settings, always 8 survivors spawning constantly, no extra special spawns just specials having 2x health, our own balance settings etc. for 8 player coop, also i included pretty much all the important Bot control Cvars, so the same changes that most of the "Improved Bots" workshop mods do i have already included as well, also setting bots to space out a little extra so the group isnt cramped. (see service log for details)

************************************** Installation ******************************************

When the file downloads, open file explorer and click Downloads on the left tall menu, find and right click the zip file and extract it, then go into the 1st folder and copy the Steam folder, then go to Local Disk (C: ) on the left side menu of the file explorer window, then go into the Program Files (x86) folder, then right click to paste it there.

(unless you installed Steam to a different location when you 1st got it, in which case paste it there, but you would know if you didnt install it to the default location)

If theres any questions or concerns let me know, and as always happy gaming guys and girls!

(* see the Installation Guide & ReadMe in the 1st folder after you extract the zip file for more details, or the beginning of the Twitch Video Instructional shows how to install Steam mods we have for download at our DG website, cuz i pack them differently to make it easier for the average user to install, or less steps anyway *)

(* sry no Linux version unless its needed, if so ill grab the Linux SM and few plugins with Linux versions to make another Linux pack, although im guessing most people using Linux for a Desktop at this point in time are knowledged enough to do most of this stuff themselves, or at least comfortable enough with looking it up and finding out how. *)

- Still having issues with getting more than the default standard L4D2 number of players into a match after the Install?

- Positively sure you did everything correctly to enable it for your Local Host match?

- So frustrated you have the overwhelming urge to straight up bludgeon me for not making it work properly from the get go?

(lol no worries it happens to us all with Tech stuff ;) which includes professionals as well, so welcome to the basics of Modding / modifying your own software's files to get a desired result thats different than the original design, and it only gets worse in the profession cuz they had to code and make it function. . . )

first off take a sec to relax, take a deep breath, have a smoke, eat a lude, or whatever the thing that is your preference to chill lol, cuz i cant take a bludgeoning at this point, i still have BS to do, let alone all i still got left is my rugged good looks . . . and thats how i makes my livins to get by (^_^ ) (j/k of course, just in case i have to mention cuz it wasnt obvious enough)

but in all seriousness its okay so dont worry, sometimes its not even something you did wrong or thats wrong with your stuff, and even if so it can be fixed, and on that note we need to start a process of elimination to start narrowing down possible culprits that are involved with the system that has been altered / modded, and for the buggy game that is L4D2 there are usually multiples so to proceed below.

The 1st question should probably be the following below, when having issues with accessible player count in L4D2 games / matchs :
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

- How exaclty are these players attempting to access / join the L4D2 match?

- If its by being invited through the Steam Friends List system by a connected player?

- Or are they trying to enter the connect IPaddress Dev Console command with your PCs displayed IP address in the match?

(check by starting the game and entering the Dev Console command status and it will give you info for your current match, Public Server info as well as Player info like Steam ID)

- Or entering the command openserverbrowser into their Dev Console to join with the Server Browser?

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Since around 2016 with the Steam Pipe update, but im not 100% positive on the updates contents / purpose so dont quote me on the reason, although i do definitely remember the general time, and also remember that before the said time, we could use the Steam Friends List invite option for extra players in L4D2, which was really great. . . . .

Then after an average seeming update to L4D2 update around the time of 2016-2018, i later found i could no longer use the standard Steam Friends List option to invite friends into a L4D2 gamemode match after it has the number of players that is the default # value of players for said L4D2 gamemode, and it at that point started refusing to connect extra player counts and would give the invited player the Full Game pop up.

So now L4D2 will start giving any invited players the Full Game error when using the normal Steam Invite options, so for regular Coop Campaign its after 4 players are already connected to said match.
(usually unless you have some of the Lobby Mods which might make it allow 8 instead)

so if you get the
Full Game error with everything set correctly, the rest of your joining friends will have to open their Dev Console for their game and enter the openserverbrowser command, that will allow them to see the standard Steam Server Browser and find your game there to join.

(which is formally known as the Half Life Server Window which is the game it was originally created for us in, and i find that the broken invite option is usually the quickest and easiest issue this kind of thing could be)

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

If the problem turns out to not be some bug with L4D2 itself or its systems / operation? . . . Then work those typing skills and hit us with it!

But 1st you can check the Help and Feedback section of our DG website forums page.
To check if the problem has already been covered there in the past.

Or also just skim check the reply comment posts in this Thread Topic, in case someone already asked about your problem in here, and it was possibly already answered as well.

Otherwise dont be shy, cuz the more info and/or circumstances to the problem and/or situation could be really helpful in narrowing down whats the cause of it all, and usually someone will get to it when they have time and/or an idea, so no worries we can usually get each other's backs with this stuff and figure it out, so more players have more fun ;P

Personally i would also highly suggest for most players to check these types of mods out in the Steam Workshop.

steamcommunity.com

Steam Workshop::8 Player Lobby ↑↑↑

it should allow you to make a coop lobby with 8 player slots to fill, then starting the lobby with the Local Host server type will take them into your game, be prepared for the possible lag tho from so many players in local mode.

steamcommunity.com

Steam Workshop::8 Slots Lobby Mod ↑↑↑

or this one that basically does the same thing, but just does it in a different way, by changing your games normal Coop Campaign Lobby settings, instead of through the Mutation system like the 1st did.

if Local Host has too much lag or just wont work for you, these same lobby slot systems should work with our DG L4D2 servers, for the 1st one pick 8 player lobby mutation, make a lobby, edit settings and change mode to Campaign, change server type of lobby from Official Dedicated to Steam Group Server, then start match and pick our 8 player servers DG | Coop #1 or #3 Custom, from your group list, after joining our DG Public Steam Group of course.
(just dont let the lobby vote to start or it will pick a random server at the end of the countdown timer, which might not be set up for 8 players in Coop)

and if your planning on Hosting Local, or just want to try stuff in Single Player mode.

i would suggest bookmarking this website link, it goes to the Valve wiki basically that has all the different Cvar commands you can enter into your Listenserver.cfg file to change different stuff, just make sure to add the sm_cvar before the cvar in the linked list to make it be changed by Sourcemod, otherwise it wont work unless you also set sv_cheats 1, and you dont want to turn that on or all players will be able to use the Cvar commands that are qualified as a cheat, for example No Clip, so anyone would be able to fly around.
(you will see how i did that when you go to open the Listenserver.cfg file and add the new line, just follow the same format)
(careful when adjusting certain Game Cvar Values, some can cause a bit of strain on your hardware, so if your PC isnt great you might have some issues with trying to increase zed spawns by 3x or more, meaning you may have issues with not being able to get more than X amount of players into a match, depending on your hardware)

List of L4D2 Cvars - Valve Developer Community

developer.valvesoftware.com
developer.valvesoftware.com

heres hoping Valve doesnt decide to break anything else with more updates lol, not that i dont appreciate their attention to this decade old game

oh if you get issues with a joining player stuck in spectate you can try using the !survivor chat command, which makes the player that enters it in chat join the survivor team, although they might have to wait till the next rescue closet to get out

seems like Superversus currently has that bug, and also sometimes when you have 5+ players join but then some leave, it doesnt like to correctly unload the extra survivors from the team, looks like the person that made the LS update knows of the bug, but currently doesnt have the knowledge of why its happening, but if we get more eyes looking at it and get the plugin fixed i can move the fix into the pack and reupload it easy enough, if so ill make a post and update the websites page so it says whats fixed going from V1.1 to v1.2

o hmm im not sure if that will work exactly how we need cuz i remember it was used with superversus before, but then after Muerdo picked up doing his superversus versions he added in a survivor identity fix to go with his main version of the plugin, so it should already do that pretty much

thanks tho i totally forgot about it, i can always pop it in to check how it loads, and if its all good we should be good to go and i can add it to the upload

Hello!

New to forums, hope you are healthy and stay well.

I tried to download the DG 8 players pack.
I installed the files into the Steam folder.
Modified launch options as well.

When I start a Campaign mode I still only have 4 slots.

Am I doing something wrong?

Thank so much!
Be well y'all.

Best Regards,
Kevin H.

hey kevin, all is well or well enough lol

o nope you just about got it all correct, although when you go to Campaign and then make your own Lobby, make sure the Edit Game Settings in the lobby and change the Server Type to Local Host instead of the Official Dedicated, then when you start the game it will try to run the match from your game / PC with you as the Local host, although depending on your internet provider and some other things you might run into issues having other players join your local host match

-
players sometimes cant run a Local Host match and have other players connect cuz of the type of ISP they have (internet service provider), in which case you have to log into your Routers IP address from on your PC with a web browser, and do whats called "forwarding a port" which allows incoming connections to your residential internet connection, which usually isnt needed so its not allowed by default

or other times even if your Local Host does work correctly with no extra effort other than choosing the Local Host option, then theres a good chance the friends you want to join will be so far away from your physical location that their ping / latency will be really high giving them bad lagging,, in which case make sure when your hosting a Local Host match as the host / lobby leader, be sure to plug your PC into your Internet Router with an Ethernet Cord, dont use Wi-Fi to connect to the internet when your hosting a Local Host match otherwise the ping will easily be 2x or 3x as bad

(the issues with ping / latency in Local Host matchs is most residential internet connections are capped at a 5 MB per sec upload speed, and most times its a 1 MB per sec upload speed connecting through Wi-Fi, so the Hosts connection cant keep up with sending out the needed info to all the other players connecting, when you rent an actual Dedicated Server PC / Server Box PC to host your own Dedicated Servers or web applications like our DG site, the company that has the hardware setups for you to rent which all your users access have a business class internet provider so they have GBs worth of speeds per machine)

-
otherwise you can just go into single player and play with all the changes working and active, if the -insecure command is added to launch options in the properties page

oh yes sry i should probably put the sm and mm version in the post, yeah it was the latest versions from a month or 2 ago when i grab all the updates, you can always update the versions if you want by getting the new latest version and unzip their folders, then copy the folders for SM and MM and paste them in the same places you find them in your own game folders, and once its all merged in its good to go with no other setup

except for you might have to re-add your steam id to the admin.cfg file in the folders → C:\ Program Files(x86) \ Steam \ SteamApps \ common \ left 4 dead 2 \ left4dead2 \ addons \

(anytime you see one of those lines that looks like that starts with C:\ or E:\ etc. it just means thats the places / locations / folders you have to click on in the File Explorer program to get to a certain folder location, just in case cuz i remember starting out with PC stuff i was like wtf does that line mean? lol)

SM - 1.10.0
MM - 1.11.0

Is this broken because everytime a player joins a character gets added and then quickly removed

yes there seems to be a bug in the SuperVersus plugin for how it adds new survivors for over 4 joining players, also when ppl leave it doesnt like to remove the survivor, the few ppl that worked on making the updates for most of the plugins in the Credits file are aware of it but havent figured it out, so if it gets fixed sometime ill update the pack with the fixed version and probably update to whatever the latest SM and MM versions at that time, using older version is usually fine unless theres a change in syntax or somethin

you can try having the player use the !survivor chat command to make them join to survivor team, which will make another survivor but they will probably have to wait till the next rescue closet

using the 2nd DG pack settings, that always has 8 survivors spawned into the map even if its 1 player and 7 bots works fine tho, just playing single player has a lot of bots lol

o yeah no worries, its not like we avoid certain stuff cuz its what we do, the more people getting into this side of things for games the better

yes you can always actually rent a server box PC from a service provider like NFO servers, which i would suggest personally an-unmanaged server so you can actually log into the server PC and view a desktop screen like when using Teamviewer or something, then you just learn the few things different you need to set up for a Dedicated server instead of setting up your own client version of the game with SM and plugins

or you can find some services that allow you to rent a specific game server for so much $, although those are a little bit less in performance cuz a lot of times they are game servers installed onto a server PC with other players / peoples game servers, and depending on how they run theirs it can impact the overall performance of the others on the same box

although that gets a little complicated and costs you anywhere from 6 or 7$ US for 1 game server, or 15 - 20$ US for a small server box to install whatever 1 game server your running at the time, if you can learn the linux stuff too, otherwise Windows servers are worse with the license fee, but its nice to have your own box and PC to handle so you can set whatever settings you want etc. or just change game servers whenever by installing another game servers files to setup, or have backups of each thing to move in and out, plus your server is separated from the rest with your own dedicated processor(s) and harddrive partition

-

or instead of that you can try the Local Host option in the lobbys Server Type setting, which makes everyone connect to your PC running the zeds and map stuff, although that performance is the worst for connecting players being a non-dedicated server, so if you cant get that to work out or everyone lags, or cant get an actual dedicated server, then its best to look for groups like ours here where we run a few servers for everyone, then if the group gets a few ppl donating 1$ or 2$ with Patreon they can expand further and so on

(just find some that are in your area / country, that way you can connect to their servers without too much lag, our stuff is usually in the center of the States, so if your in the US or Canada you should be able to use ours just fine)

which is probably how we will have to keep older games alive eventually lol, cuz devs are shutting down their official dedicated servers sometimes only 5 years after a games release, so also the more groups we get running servers for games the better chance we can all keep playing the products we bought xP

(this is why i feel like game devs should be required to release the dedicated server version of their games to the customers that buy the game product, so when they shut stuff down we can keep running servers for each other when there is enough interest in said game product still)

Oh yea question prolly should'nt ask this on here but do I rent servers to host games?

It depends. If your internet speed is decent, and your computer is decent, then like Tom said you can run your own L4D2 server from your PC.

Ideally, if you're new to running game servers, I recommend using a company like GameServers or NFO Servers. They do the basic game install for you and provide support if you need it. I'd choose NFO Servers over Game Servers. Their network is better. And their server performance is better.

Renting and managing your own box might be too complicated. I wouldn't recommend this path for a beginner.

oh yes, straight up renting a game server from a provider instead of a Server PC (unmanaged server) is probably best if you dont really plan to get into things too much, cuz they run through whatever tool is used to install said game server for you, personally id suggest learning what goes into running the whole Server Box itself so you can do it that way, but im sure for some players just wanting to host a server for them and their friends for some game its fine

but it definitely all comes down to how tech savy of a user you are, and also if you actually plan to "get into" installing dedicated game servers for games you play that need it, in which case id suggest checking some Guides in Steam or lookin for someone to explain which tools you use to install the dedicated game server (SteamCMD tool for all Valve games and most games on Steam as well), then how to set it up and organize its plugins and configs in the servers folders

(also look for communities that host the kinds of servers you are planning on hosting, and they are usually willing to help you out with some basic info of how to get things running, if they have the free time that is lol)

---
if you dont think youll manage (or at least not without huge headaches and lots of frustration you dont want to deal with), then yeah i wouldnt suggest trying server hosting to the average PC user / game player, its a bit of work keeping things running and making sure to update it, and fix issues if an update breaks something lol etc. which is usually just tediously stressful work

just look around for some Groups / gaming communities that are near you, or just host their servers in your area so you can use them, then support them so you and your friends can use the said groups servers, or check the Managed Server Renting options if you have to cuz you cant find any or ones you like, or if the game has shut down all their servers and its just needed to play online at all

Hello, thanks for the mods btw. It works very well!

Btw what should I do to revert back the old tank health (Normal difficulty has 12k HP tank on 4+ players)
If it's possible I'd like to change the tank health as well.

I'm noob at this so a guide is really appreciated, thanks! :)

hey no prob i figured it would be helpful to get all the plugin stuff together for L4D2, although to be clear it isnt really "my mod" per say, its more of a collection of plugins / mods for the Source Engine that allow you to change and control stuff in the L4D2 game, i just took the stuff and organized it into the proper folder structure so everything goes where it needs to be, all credits for what can be done with this stuff goes to the talented community developers (modders) over at the sourcemod / alliedmodders site

o hmm, last i knew in the default pack the Normal difficulty health value for the tank is 4000, then when each extra player joins over 4 players, it adds 20% more of the default health on to the original value, so with 5 ppl there should be 4800 health, and 5 players 5600, going up to 7600 at all 8 players

=
but either way if you wanna change most of the tank and Special settings, you just have to find the superversus.cfg file in your L4D2 folders, which is located in the path location here

C:\ Program Files(x86) \ Steam \ SteamApps \ common \ left 4 dead 2 \ left4dead2 \ addons \ cfg \ sourcemod \

anytime you see one of these lines that looks like that and starts with C:\ or E:\ etc.
it just means thats the places / locations / folders you have to click on in the File Explorer program in a Windows OS PC to get to a certain folder / file location, which is the program used in Windows to generally manage your PC's harddrive contents, in Mac OS its the Finder App i guess? lol, and linux depends on the distribution

just in case cuz i remember starting out with PC stuff i was like wtf does that line mean? lol, so you just open the File Explorer program and click on the C:\ drive option on the left side panel, then double click the Program Files(x86) folder, then the Steam folder, then the SteamApps folder and so on till you get through all the folders in the line above

then when your in the configs folder you will find a bunch of cfgs for all the plugins, and just open and edit the superversus.cfg to find the Tank Health lines, and just change the number on the end which should be 4000, then there is also a Tank Multi setting that adds the multiplication to the tank health for each joining player past 4, which is set to .20 for 20%

=
if you wanna change anything else really then its all in the Listenserver.cfg file, which is 1 folder before the Superversus.cfg so you go through the folders

C:\ Program Files(x86) \ Steam \ SteamApps \ common \ left 4 dead 2 \ left4dead2 \ addons \ cfg \

and in the cfg folder you can find and edit the listenserver.cfg file, which has all the changes i made to bots and other stuff etc. which you might also find some of my mad ramblings and jokes in there on the comment lines with // at the start, which makes it so that text that comes after the // isnt loaded by the game, so dont mess with those // unless your sure
